I've been thinking about this for a while. I think it would be vital to know the needs of your community to even begin to be able to show them that you care. First I think one has to step out of their comfort zones and make an effort to find ways to get to know the people living your neighborhood. This doesn't come easy for any of us in our current culture. Gone are the days of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood's "Won't you be my neighbor?" and Seseme Street's "Who are the people in your neighborhood". Most people have no idea who the people are in their neighborhood. So, how is a neighborhood, community church supposed to know and respond to real needs if no one really knows what those needs are? Perhaps that's where the need to create so many time-consuming, "insider" programs (programs targeted mainly for "the faithful")came from. Just a thought. Overall, taking time to step out of our boxes even when we don't feel like it and find opportunities to find out who people are is key.
What community? Before long the entire city of Canton will be seized because of foreclosure. At this rate, we'll be living in a ghost town by Christmas. Sorry, if I sound negative. It stems from my frustration with my inability to do anything about it. Sometimes a girl just has to vent.
